Anemone - Wind Flowers - Summer and Autumn flowering

Anemone is a huge genus, mostly from the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, and a number of forms have evolved. Many Anemones are natural woodland or woodland edge plants and they are some of the very best shade loving plants. They contribute to the shady border from the first Anemone nemorosa in March to the last Japanese Anemone in October or November. There is often an Anemone in flower.

Spring flowering wood anemones need shade from Spring and Summer sun, and will do best in a moist humus rich soil.

A lovely double dark pinky red flowered form of this garden must have. A good plant with strong dark red/pink flowers over dark green foliage, one of the earliest to flower.
The Japanese Anemones are all very good in some shade as long as the soil is not too dry, so a north wall aspect is ideal.

A medium growing form with white flowers with pink calyx. Very tolerant of dry soils and conditions. One of the most and best evergreen of the forms. Offers Autumn brightness as the leaves colour. Makes a fantastic dense ground cover even in dry shade. We have it growing at the base of a hornbeam hedge in a very thin soil and it is very happy.

A blue-chip and striking Spring woodlander, comparatively large blue flowers in masses in Spring and possibly the odd one in Autumn too. Slowing spreading to form a mat of foliage. Evergreen and quite charming. Likes woodsy conditions and combines beautifully with spring bulbs and ferns. I have seen it used as a very stylish underplant in a formal courtyard garden too.

Bluish pearly pink flowers. A nice form of this woodland toughy from the Old Rectory, Burghfield. Will seed around to a certain extent and thrive in pretty much the driest position. An incredibly useful Geranium, a great candidate for underplanting in shaded and wooded spots. Wonderful for natural or semi wild planting schemes.

Good in shade even dry shade, with orange flashed leaves all growing season turning to full glowing embers in the Autumn.
