Brunnera

A first class genus - an invaluable and easy groundcover with attractive foliage, good in both borders and containers. The hairy, heart shaped leaves have wonderful markings and airy flower stems are held above the leaves in Spring. They combine brilliantly with other Spring flowering plants and have a wonderful role in supporting Summer flowering perennials too. Brunneras are happy in dry shade but if soil conditions are slightly damper, you will be rewarded with more luxuriant growth, more fabulous foliage. They really do offer extraordinarily good value for money.

In dry shade, consider partnering Brunnera with Iris foetidissima and Helleborus foetidus, whilst for a moister spot consider growing alongside ferns.

A very useful groundcover for tough, dry shady conditions.

A mythical thug for a shady spot where it can spread and display its fragrant white flowers in Spring. Will tolerate dry soils. It was used most effectively as ground cover in a small, shady courtyard show garden at Chelsea 2012, and can be seen in the walled garden at NT Mottisfont forming a wonderful ground cover under a fig tree.
{Cultivation}
Galium will spread quite vigorously, but it is a plant that will survive the toughest of dry shady conditions.

Once established it's very tolerant of soils that dry out in Summer in shade.
